CUC testing prepaid meters

Last week, CUC installed one prepaid meter at a residential house in San Jose to test the prepayment meter system program.

“This prepaid meter will allow a customer to monitor usage and help him manage consumption accordingly,” CUC Executive Director Antonio Muna said.

CUC power division manager Gary P. Camacho said they recently acquired 500 units of prepaid meters.

“The system has been used in Yap, American Samoa and Pohnpei,” he said

With the prepayment meter system, Muna said a consumer purchases credit and uses electricity until such time as the credit expires.

The consumer can, at any time, purchase more credits, Muna said.

Jose Agulto CUC power division meter inspector, told Variety that upon purchasing a token the customer will enter a PIN code to the interface unit connected by a power cord to an existing outlet in the house.

Muna said CUC is targeting to install 500 units this year.

A pre-paid customer does not need to pay a security deposit.

Moreover, the installation of prepaid meters will be a great advantage to CUC — the agency no longer needs to send bills to customers and meter readers to households.

“We are going to put some customers on a trial basis and see how it works out,” Muna said.
