DPS spokesman Jason T. Tarkong said police confirmed the rape case on March 7, 2009.
Police learned that between the late hours of March 6 and early morning March 7, the suspect entered the victim’s bedroom and sexually assaulted her while she was sleeping.
The incident occurred while other members of the family where in the house asleep.
The victim was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment.
Evidence was obtained but investigation was still ongoing, Tarkong said.
Anyone having information about the person responsible for this crime can contact Detective Vincent Mareham at 664-9042, or call the Crimes Stoppers hotline at 234-7272.
The Crime Stoppers program pays cash rewards up to $1,000 for any information that will lead to an arrest.
In an earlier interview, DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela said that the unavailability of facilities on island was hindering the quick resolution of pending cases.
He said police already had a suspect but they were still waiting for results of the DNA samples sent to Hawaii for tests.
It will take months before results are returned to the CNMI, he added.
“We could send the DNA samples for testing to the mainland, but it will take longer. Hawaii is the nearest we can send the samples to,” Tudela said.
