Senator: Police clearance should be required from political appointees

Reyes, R-Saipan, made the statement after the Variety disclosed that one of the newly reconfirmed board members of the Commonwealth Election Commission has a pending theft by deception case in Superior Court.

The case against Commissioner Jose L. Itibus, who has been on the board since 1998, was filed this year.

Reyes said the law should be changed to reflect the changing times.

Cabinet, judicial and government board nominations require the advice and consent of the nine-member Senate.
