“Enough is enough. For the sake of the people of Tinian you must resign and step down as mayor of Tinian and Aguiguan,” he said in a letter to the mayor.
San Nicolas accused Dela Cruz of betraying and losing the people’s trust after a year in office.
He said the mayor violated several laws of the CNMI.
“We have suffered tremendous economic and financial hardships due, in large part, to your incompetence as an elected official, your selfishness, your lack of diplomacy and your political immaturity,” San Nicolas said.
He accused Dela Cruz of involvement in questionable purchase orders, reimbursement, and expenditures of public and municipal funds as well as questionable hirings.
“Clearly, you have given the people of Tinian a preview of the next four years: more corruption, nepotism, blatant abuse of power and abuse of government funds for personal gain,” San Nicolas said.
Dela Cruz was off-island and could not be reached for comment yesterday.
In a previous statement, the mayor said San Nicolas was attacking him because the former casino commissioner did not get the lights he requested for his farm.
San Nicolas said Tinian needs a new leader to regain its credibility.
He said the people on Tinian and abroad, especially those who supported the mayor in 2009, no longer consider Dela Cruz their representative.
“Many of your supporters despise your administration both publicly and privately, and you have successfully enraged an entire generation of college students that have watched their scholarship assistance dwindle to $250,” he said.
According to San Nicolas, the mayor has embarrassed Tinian.
“Our people are outraged and embarrassed whenever your name is mentioned as the mayor of Tinian. Therefore, we demand your resignation,” he said.
