He said these new members who are now on the board are “trustworthy visionaries,” well known to the people and very active in the community.
He said many of the party’s new officers are not only new to the organization, but also new to politics.
Torres said he and the new leaders of the party have figured out that if they want a new direction, “we must take action ourselves.”
Some of their officials, he said, are community, health, education and environmental advocates who want to see improvement in the overall quality of life for the people of the commonwealth.
While they are seeking candidates for the November elections, Torres said they are also revising their bylaws.
The party, moreover, is finalizing a platform “that is very much in touch with today’s CNMI.”
It covers economic, health, retirement, utilities, education, and other critical issues, Torres said.
The party plans to have a slate of candidates for the House of Representatives and the Senate and will reveal their names along with their platform “real soon.”
Right now, the Democratic Party is registering members who can vote in future primaries and join the committees.
Torres said they have moved to July 10 the deadline for the candidates to submit their letters of intent.
The letters of intent they have so far received are now being reviewed.
He said the efforts of aligning the local party with the Democratic National Committee continue.
“We might be able to have representatives in the next Democratic National Convention and vote for the Democratic nominee in the next U.S. presidential election,” he added.
Torres said they will invite President Obama to visit Saipan.
The Democrats are the ruling party in the U.S.
