DPL Secretary John S. Del Rosario Jr. issued the announcement in response to the concerns aired by citizens about political billboards on the beachside of Beach Road.
This prohibition, Del Rosario said, includes billboards installed on trailers and trucks that are seen parked along the beachside.
The prohibition is “for the safety of drivers and pedestrians along the western side of Beach Road,” Del Rosario said.
While no violations have been reported to DPL, Del Rosario encourages the candidates to cooperate with the department.
Covenant Party Chairman Gregorio M. Camacho has directed the removal of all campaign billboards along the beachside of Beach Road.
“Although I regret that our volunteers mistakenly placed the signs on the beachside, I thank the public for bringing this matter to our attention so that we could take prompt action to resolve the situation and comply with the law,” he said.
The Covenant Party, he added, welcomes public feedback and urges all its candidates and members to comply with CNMI laws and regulations during this year’s elections.
Del Rosario also anticipates an increasing problem with people who will be camping along Beach Road several days prior to the 4th of July Parade.
He said there’s no permit or procedure now in place to regulate this activity.
But DPL, Del Rosario said, will come up next year with a set of procedures to ensure public safety and the cleanliness of Beach Road.
“For now, we will simply secure the names of people using Beach Road for the parade in order to ensure that no one leaves trash behind after the festivities,” he said.
“Again we ask for everyone’s cooperation so that all may share a full view of the parade,” he added.
