Election commission plans to relocate some polling places

This is in compliance with the law that prohibits campaigning within the 300-foot radius from polling places, the commission’s Executive Director Robert A. Guerrero said.

The scheme, he said, will eliminate intimidation.

If approved by the election board, Guerrero said they may relocate five polling places.

Because of an ongoing road expansion project, the polling place at San Vicente Elementary School will be transferred to Dandan Elementary School.

The fences separating the private properties and the school are also being “looked into,” Guerrero said.

The polling place at Koblerville Elementary School will be transferred to the Koblerville Youth Center, he added.

San Antonio Elementary School has a similar situation — there is a nearby private property, he said.

Hopwood Junior High School is considered as option for the polling place at SAES, he added.

The polling place at the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council office will be transferred to the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, he said.

According to Guerrero, the proposed relocations will not entail additional costs.

The same number of personnel manning the election will be maintained, he added.

Guerrero said he is confident that the commission board will approve the proposal which, he added, will help  ensure the smooth conduct of the election.
