Family members said there will be Mass at 5 p.m. at the 13 Fishermen Memorial Monument on Beach Road.
Rep. Ray A. Tebuteb, R-Saipan, said most of those who died were related to his family.
Yesterday, Tebuteb joined with other family members in cleaning the monument in preparation for the gathering today.
The event, which is open to the public, signifies the unique relationship between the people and the ocean, he said.
The offering of prayers, he added, is not only intended for all those who died on Sept. 23, 1986 but for the other community members who have passed away as well.
The 13 fishermen were Joseph Lisua, Martin L. Saures, Pedro L. Mettao, Joseph R. Kaipat, Benusto M. Lisua, Silvestre R. Selepeo, Juan Benusto R. Olopai, Isidro R. Romolor, Jovencio C. Falguera, Joaquin L. Moteisou, Jose T. Igisaiar, Enrique L. Moteisou and Guillermo Saures.
The names of two other fishermen — Antonio S. Fitial and Emilio T. Lisua — were included in the monument because they died on the same day.
