Feds, lawmakers to discuss marine monument

In a memorandum to their colleagues, Senate President Pete P. Reyes, R-Saipan, and Speaker Arnold I. Palacios, R-Saipan, asked the presence of each member to the meeting with the White House representatives on Monday morning, Oct. 20, in the House chamber.

“We know members have very busy schedules, but this is a very important issue so we are requesting to please mark your calendars,” Reyes and Palacios stated in their  memorandum.

The meeting was requested by the White House representatives.

Last month, Allen Tom, the regional director for the U.S. National Marine Sanctuaries Program, was here to get the “feedback” from the local people regarding the proposal to designate the waters surrounding the three uninhabited northern islands of Maug, Asuncion and Uracas as a marine monument or sanctuary.

The governor, both houses of the Legislature and the mayors are opposed to the proposal.
