The head of the police drug unit, Inspector Sakeo Ganivatu, said they believed ingredients used to manufacture ice, formally known as methamphetamine, are sent from Fiji to overseas destinations through the suspected racket.
Three airport workers have been sent home after being implicated while more suspensions are expected.
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug with potent central nervous system stimulant properties. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, methamphetamine abuse has outpaced both heroin and cocaine in some areas of the U.S.
Ganivatu said immigration officials are also believed to be part of the ring which was uncovered following the discovery of a white powder on a Nausori resident passing through the Nadi International Airport.
