Fiji’s interim AG says VP possible under decree

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau was sworn in as vice president on Friday.

He’s the first vice president appointed by the interim government since it took power in a 2006 coup.

His appointment was under the eighth decree issued by President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, after revoking Fiji’s 1997 Constitution, and the mass sacking of the country’s judiciary.

The president’s actions followed a court ruling which declared the 2006 coup illegal.

Fiji’s interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the appointment was made possible when the president signed the decree.

“Well as you know the constitution’s been abrogated and so we’re essentially starting on a clean slate,” he told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat program.

“And this office has been created under the decree and an appointment’s been made almost immediately.”
