Financial aid for part time students mulled

THE State Board of Regents of the Northern Marianas College is considering to give part-time students financial aid to help them finish their college education despite their limited resources, according to Board Chairman Fermin M. Atalig.

Right now, part-time NMC students are ineligible for grants because they have lower academic units than a regular student.

Atalig said this is affecting NMC’s income, at the same time, prolongs the period by which a student can finish his/her course.

“One of the proposals is to suggest to the governor and to the scholarship board that assistance to part-time students should be given because at this time they are not eligible for grants which obviously reduces our income because they cannot pay,” the chairman said.

The board is also seriously considering to lower the tuition fee imposed on foreign students to increase their enrollment rate amid the government’s plan to develop the CNMI as the number one area in the region for tertiary education.
