“The austerity measures, the government shutdown, the reduced work hours and the hard economic times have contributed a lot to the tension in families and this has resulted in more domestic violence cases,” Deleon Guerrero said.
To date, Deleon Guerrero said they have recorded 27 domestic violence cases in which females were mostly the victims.
“Domestic violence is one of the most common problems in the CNMI,” she said.
Deleon Guerrero said one man sought Karidat’s help because he was beaten up by his wife.
The victim told Deleon Guerrero that he did not retaliate for fear that he might kill his wife.
Deleon Guerrero said unfortunately, they cannot provide shelter for male victims of domestic violence.
Despite Karidat’s limited resources, Deleon Guerrero said they cannot turn down female domestic violence victims who seek temporary shelter at the Guam Esperansa.
“We need all the help we can get but we are thankful to the members of the community who continue to provide support and donations for our long list of clients,” Deleon Guerrero said.
Karidat is a church-based charitable organization.
