Fisherman drowns, another missing in Naftan Point

Jian Sheng, 32, was pronounced dead at 5:51 p.m. on Monday by Dr. Gregory Kotheimer at the Commonwealth Health Center,

Jian Sheng’s body was found at the bottom of the waters near the cliff line within the general location where he and his companion were reported to have been fishing, according to DPS acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas Aguon Blas Jr.

As of press time yesterday, Blas said the department’s Fire Safety and Rescue Unit and Boating Safety Unit, together with the Emergency Management Office and the Division of Fish and Wildlife, were conducting a land and sea search for the second victim, Jianke Li, 39.

“Our office will be releasing additional information as soon as confirmations have been made and the next of kin of the victim have been notified,” Blas said.

DPS said a Mr. Lin called at about 11:52 a.m. on Monday and reported that Jian Sheng and Jianke Li were missing.

Investigation by Patrol Officer Jesse Cepeda showed that two men went out to the Naftan Point in Obyan for some cliff line fishing sometime around 8 p.m. on Sunday, and were expected to return home before midnight.

Blas said the department’s Fire Search and Rescue Unit and Boating Safety officers were deployed to the area after family members reported to DPS that two men had not returned.

The victims resided in San Antonio.

A cliff line and sea search was conducted at Naftan Point, located behind the Hawaiian Rock Quarry, Blas said.

On same day, at about 2:44 p.m., the body of Jian Sheng was found.

Due to weather and terrain condition, the body was only pulled up from the cliff line at about 4:30 p.m.

Blas said a family friend who was at the scene identified the body as belonging to Jian Sheng who was then transported to CHC.
