Fitial OKs cemetery care, NMD registry and licensing bills

House Bill 17-118, now  Public Law 17-38, was ntroduced by Rep. Sylvestre Iguel, Covenant-Saipan. It will provide care, maintenance and supervision of public cemeteries.

The law tasks the Department of Public Health, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works to the job.

It also imposes a $50 burial fee.

Rep. Ramon A. Tebuteb’s House Bill 17-16, now Public Law 17-39, will amend Public Law 14-95, which pertains to the Professional Licensing Law Board.

The new law allows the licensing board to “enter into contracts for the purchase or other acquisition, using scoring or validation of professional tests.”

“In lieu of an examination, the board may accept the license or certification issued by an agency of the United States, or of a state or political subdivision of a state, or of a territory or possession of the United States,” the new law stated.

House Bill 17-57 which was introduced by Vice Speaker Felicidad T. Ogumoro, Covenant-Saipan, is now Public Law 17-40.

It establishes a Northern Marianas Descent Registry within the Commonwealth Election Commission. This is to maintain official listings and records of persons of Northern Marianas descent and others as may be allowed or required pursuant to the Act.

Such registry, the bill states, “shall produce the Official Northern Marianas Descent Identification Card that will be issued only to persons who are qualified pursuant to  Article 12 of the Northern Mariana Islands Constitution.”

Article 12 states that the “acquisition of permanent and long-term interests in real property within the commonwealth shall be restricted to persons of Northern Marianas descent.”
