Fitial swears-in Camacho

Along with Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, acting Chief Justice Alex C. Castro,  President Judge Robert C. Naraja, Speaker Eli D. Cabrera, other officials and Camacho’s family witnessed the ceremony in the governor’s conference room at 2 p.m.

Camacho’s wife, attorney Viola Alepuyo, and their 11-year-old son, Ulen Joseph, stood beside him as he took his oath of office in Chamorro.

Fitial and Inos said they are confident that Camacho will be a fair and impartial judge.

“I want everybody to understand it’s not an easy responsibility. So I continue to pray not only for him but for the rest of the judges,” Fitial said.

He added, “The only thing we cannot change in this world is the 10 Commandments. Everything [else] can be changed. I believe in God and I believe in the judiciary system.”

Asked later what he meant, the governor said there are people who make rules as an excuse for not being able to do what they need to do.

“For example, if I ask them to do something they would say sorry they cannot do it. And if I ask why, they would say because the regulations do not allow them to do that, or the law does not allow them to do it.”

Fitial said “we can always change” rules.

“That is what I mean. Anything that man makes can be changed. Anything that is made by man can always be changed. So there is no excuse for not doing what you are supposed to do. You can always change the law to make it happen,” the governor said.

Camacho said he will start on his new job this Monday.

Although he has been attorney for quite a while, Camacho said “the perspective of a judge is different.”

“As an attorney, you represent only one side of the controversy but as a judge you have to find a balance between the two different parties,” he added.

Camacho said yesterday was a historic moment for him and a big accomplishment not only for himself but also for his wife, his family as well as the many people who have encouraged him through the years.
