Flores confident DPL will allow long-term use of Lower Base lot for animal shelter

Based on the temporary authorization issued by Public Lands  Secretary Oscar M. Babauta, the mayor’s office can use the lot, including its existing structure, only until April 5, 2011.

“DPL is supportive and they will extend it knowing that our program is an essential public service,” Flores said.

In the past, he added, DPL was not updated about the progress of the development of the proposed animal shelter.

He said if the mayor’s office can show how it is implementing the program, DPL will extend the land-use term.

The proposed animal shelter facility has already been painted, cleaned and repaired, he said.

According to DPL’s temporary authorization, the mayor’s office must prepare the site, conduct cleanup, properly remove debris, and conduct necessary repairs and renovation on the existing warehouse structure.

Flores said his office will request for a long-term use of the property so it can apply for grants and other financial assistance programs.
