“Our farmers need assistance especially in the marketing of their local produce and we need to let them know they play an important role especially with the looming military buildup,” Flores said.
The high shipping cost of transporting locally produced fruits and vegetables from Saipan to Guam is one of the challenges that farmers face.
Flores said he wants to see a farmers cooperative established.
“I want to help not only Saipan’s farmers but the ranchers, too, to do well and improve their productivity,” he added.
He also plans to reopen the municipal slaughterhouse.
Earlier, the Commonwealth Development Authority said the commonwealth can take advantage of the military buildup on Guam through agriculture.
The CNMI can provide fresh fruit and vegetable products to the military, CDA added.
