The committee was established by the amended Compact of Free Association with the primary aim of addressing defense and security issues and its related agreements between the two countries.
The principal purpose of its mid-year review process was to assess updates on decisions, directives and action items rendered by the Joint Committee, and discuss the best way forward for effective implementation of such directives.
The mid-year review discussed the action items for the 2009 Joint Committee Meeting, including the search and rescue agreement between the two governments, boating safety requirements for the FSM, navigation aids needs for the FSM states, sharing of statistics on FSM citizens enlisted in the U.S. military, updates on the Transnational Crime Unit and the Guam military buildup.
