Guam police raid KUAM, seize documents

“It’s regarding a theft complaint investigation. As it progresses we will issue out more releases,” Officer A.V. Camacho, spokesman for the division said, adding that the complaint was filed on Tuesday.

Joey Calvo, general manager of KUAM, said the station had to shut down for one hour while the news room was trying to beat the deadline for the 6 p.m. newscast.

“They were looking for GPD documents,” Calvo said, adding that the station’s constitutional rights were violated.

He confirmed that the search warrant had to do with KUAM’s Monday story about Edwards failing his polygraph test.

The story was reported by Mindy Aguon.

Edwards was recently selected to be a police officer I trainee.

Variety received a call from Edwards on Wednesday, saying “A search warrant is in progress as we speak at KUAM.”

When asked what the search warrant was for, Edwards indicated it had to do with KUAM’s story aired Monday night.

The search warrant was signed by Judge Anita Sukola.

Calvo said the officers took pictures of some documents. He told Variety that an item was confiscated for investigation. He did not specify what item was seized by the cops.

Despite the interruption, the station managed to air its 6 p.m. newscast.

Meanwhile, Gov. Felix P. Camacho released the following statement regarding the incident between GPD and KUAM:

“The governor’s office was not made aware of GPD’s intent and the Superior Court’s execution of a search warrant at KUAM. We will continue to sort out the facts regarding this issue and must be careful to not interfere with the powers of the court and its recent decision on this matter.”
