Governor approves $352K for school repairs

Public Law 16-10 allocates $291,210 from the Public School System’s CIP general obligation bond with the Bank of New York Trust Co.

This will fund the many critical major classroom repairs, renovations and paving of school parking areas at  public schools.

Public Law 16-11  appropriates $10,213 for the repair and maintenance of William S. Reyes Elementary School while Public Law 16-12 provides over $50,000 for the replacement of the kindergarten classrooms at San Vicente Elementary School.

All these measures were authored by Reps. Justo Quitugua, D-Saipan, David M.  Apatang, R-Saipan, House Minority Leader Oscar M. Babauta, Covenant-Saipan, and House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho, R-Saipan.

In a letter to Commissioner of Education Rita A. Sablan, Quitugua said:  “I hope that these public laws will alleviate some of the repair needs of the schools.”

The new laws designate the commissioner of education as the expenditure authority in coordination with school principals.

The funding for San Vicente’s kindergarten classroom was proposed  following the visit of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges last March. The WASC team cited the dilapidated condition of the facility as among the critical areas that need to be addressed immediately by the school.

Last year, San Vicente had 745 students, of whom 76 were kindergarten students whose classes were held in two wooden structures built more than 20 years ago.

The school has already renovated one kindergarten facility through donations from the community and businesses.

With the newly approved funding of over $50,000, SVES can start the immediate repair of the other kindergarten facility.
