Micro Challenge to get $1M

The Nature Conservancy will hand over a check of $1 million to President Remengesau on Sept. 10.The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will make the donation “in recognition of the extraordinary progress it has made in establishing and sustainably funding the Micronesia Challenge, one of the world’s first national protected area networks,” the press statement said.The handing over of the checks by the TNC officials will be scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the Palau Royal Resort.Remengesau will be the keynote speaker in slated United States Coral Reef Task Force meeting in Hawaii on Aug. 28.Remengesau said his address will focus on the Micronesian Challenge and the progress of the initiative.The Micronesia Challenge is a regional inter-governmental that would facilitate more effective conservation of marine and forest resources in Micronesia.The initiative would conserve 30 percent of near shore coastal waters and 20 percent of forest land by 2020.
