FORMER Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos may visit Saipan in June, it was learned yesterday.
Ramos is scheduled to be on Guam as the keynote speaker at the Philippine Independence Ball on June 12.
Gov. Juan N. Babauta told Variety that he would meet with Philippine Consul General Julia C. Heidemann to discuss the possible visit.
“We will talk about the possibility of the former president swinging by here. It would be a real opportunity for us to have him visit the CNMI,” Babauta said.
The Philippine ambassador to the U.S., Alberto del Rosario, will be here in June, and Babauta said he is looking forward to the envoy’s visit.
Heidemann, in a separate interview, said the Philippine Consulate General is “willing to facilitate” the invitation of the commonwealth government to the former president.
Ramos is scheduled to arrive on Guam on June 11 and stay there for three days.
A West Point graduate, Ramos was president of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. He served as deputy chief of staff of the armed forces under President Ferdinand E. Marcos, and chief of staff and defense secretary under President Corazon C. Aquino.
