GTC has highest reading, math proficiency

According to the report presented by Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan to the Saipan Rotary Club members on Tuesday, GTC reported a 62 percent reading proficiency and 61 percent math proficiency.

In reading proficiency, Tinian Elementary School and Koblerville Elementary School students recorded 55 percent and 53 percent.

In math, both schools also came in second with 56 percent.

Ranking fourth in reading proficiency was San Vicente Elementary School with 51 percent, followed by Sinapalo Elementary School with 50 percent, Dandan Elementary School with 48 percent, Oleai Elementary School and William S. Reyes Elementary School with 45 percent,   Tanapag Elementary School, Garapan Elementary School, and San Antonio Elementary School with 44 percent, and Kagman Elementary School with 36 percent.

In math proficiency, Sinapalo ranked fourth with 53 percent, San Vicente, 50 percent; Dandan, 49 percent; Garapan, 46 percent; Oelai  and San Antonio Elementary, 44 percent; William S. Reyes, 43 percent; and Tanapag and Kagman, 36 percent.

The Public School System’s overall proficiency in reading and math was 48 percent.

For middle schools, Rota Jr. High School had the highest reading and math proficiency with 57 percent in reading and 46 percent in math.

The three other middle schools — Hopwood, Chacha Oceanview and Tinian — all got 49 percent in reading.

In math, Tinian had 46 percent, followed by Chacha Oceanview with 39 percent and Hopwood with 32 percent.

The overall PSS assessment for  middle schools reported a 49 percent proficiency in reading and 41 percent proficiency in math.

Among high schools, Rota had the highest reading proficiency with 55 percent, followed by Marianas and Tinian with 46 percent, Saipan Southern  with 45 percent, and Kagman with 39 percent.

In math, Saipan Southern had the highest rate, 32 percent; followed by Tinian, 30 percent; Marianas, 28 percent; Rota,  20 percent; and Kagman, 15 percent.

The school system’s high school overall proficiency for reading was 47 percent and 25 percent for math.

Sablan said high school math includes Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry. High school reading includes American literature and British literature.
