Clea Manalastas San Nicolas received the highest honor, the Commissioner’s Award, while William Jesse DLG Camacho got the second highest, the Principal’s Award.
The awards were presented by Public School System human resources director Charley Kenty, Board of Education member Galvin Deleon Guerrero, GTC principal Charlotte Camacho, Martin Dalsaso, Jennifer M. Villagomez and Zachary Camacho.
Before the presentation of the awards, sixth grader Chelsea Karen Llovia Fama read a message from President Obama.
“Nothing is more important to our nation’s long-term success than educating our future leaders. Your commitment to learning will help you meet the educational and professional demands in your future and will help lead America to a better day,” Obama’s letter stated.
Attorney Judy Torres, the keynote speaker, spoke about the importance of hard work to ensure success in one’s educational endeavors.
“The only thing you have to do is work hard. It’s not hard and it’s not difficult,” Torres, as she narrated the successful stories of individuals who exerted efforts to help their fellow citizens.
Torres said their parents’ attendance in the ceremony indicated their dedication to help ensure that their children would be successful individuals.
School principal Charlotte Camacho told the students that their academic achievements are not enough — they should also be well-rounded individuals who are constantly improving their character, talents, creativity and discipline.
Success, she added, “is believing in your capacity for doing great things, having the people skills to get along and working with others in making contributions for a better world. It is doing what is right even when no one is watching.”
