Guam pet shop used as drop for drugs

Arnold Lopez Balcita, 29, and Michael Lopez Balcita, 32, were charged with importation of a controlled substance as a first degree felony.  Both men appeared before the magistrate’s court on Saturday.

According to the magistrate’s complaint, three officers from the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency intercepted a package on Feb. 10 containing suspected narcotics.

Upon inspection, the package was found to contain a dental floss container and a substance that then tested positive for crystal methamphetamine or “ice.”

The court document stated that a beeper warrant and a search warrant were obtained the next day and the drugs and beeper was then re-packaged and delivered to Little Wangz Petshop, which was the address on the label.

Arnold Balcita and Michael Balcita were at the pet shop when the package was delivered.

Court documents state that a motion sensor in the package followed the movements of Michael moving in the store and a search warrant was executed.

The two men were asked by investigators to have their hands examined under a ultra-violet light and remnants of a “clue-spray” were found, court documents stated.

Also found at the store in a second floor room were three glass pipes with methamphetamine residue, and two straws also with methamphetamine residue.

A customer who was at the store was interviewed by investigators.  The customer said he smoked the drug with Michael Balcita in the upstairs room and was also asked by him if there was anyone Michael Balcita could sell the drugs to.

It was noted that as of the date of the warrant, Michael Balcita gave the customer $50 worth of the drug.  When interviewed later, Michael Balcita stated in the court document that he “does smoke ice and that he opens all mail in the store.”

Arnold Balcita was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond while Michael Balcita was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.

They are scheduled to appear in court on March 4 at 4 p.m. for a preliminary hearing before Judge Anita Sukola.
