Guest workers warned against illegal recruiters

He said displaced guest workers in the commonwealth should always seek assistance from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office on Saipan regarding job offers.

The POEA reported that 13,360 job orders were approved for the U.S., which includes construction workers for Guam’s military buildup.

Consul Belinda Ante said guest workers in the commonwealth are fortunate because they have a Philippine labor office that can assist them.

Last year, hundreds of guest workers on Saipan submitted applications for Guam employment during a job fair.

Macaraig said Filipino workers should also consider job opportunities in other places.

“Saipan is only one part of the world and if they find it hard looking for a job here, they can always try other opportunities somewhere else,” he added.

POEA Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili cautioned those hoping to work on Guam and in other U.S. areas to  be on guard against the possibility of being victimized by illegal recruiters promising immediate departures.

Jardin-Manalili said the recruitment for Guam is likely to take a longer time than originally anticipated due to recent developments affecting the U.S. and Japan regarding the issue of a replacement facility for the Futenma Marine base in Okinawa.
