Speaker Froilan C. Tenorio, Covenant-Saipan, disclosed yesterday that the House Committee on Judiciary and Government Operations will determine whether the mayors and municipal employees of Saipan, Tinian and Rota should benefit from the Retirement Fund.
A few weeks ago, Tenorio solicited the opinion of the Fund and the Office of Public Auditor but neither responded to his letter.
The speaker said he may pay OPA a visit.
“They should have an opinion on this matter,” Tenorio said.
The committee, according to its chairman, Rep. Ralph S. Demapan, Covenant-Saipan, is now drafting the letters to the agencies that need to testify on the matter.
“We’re working with the legal counsel on the language of the letter,” Demapan said.
Tenorio said he wants to find out who are qualified to be members of the Retirement Fund.
He believes that only the officials and employees of the central government should benefit from the pension system.
The municipal governments, along with the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission, are not part of the central government and should not benefit from the Retirement Fund, he added.
