Hundreds seek housing assistance

The program provides  assistance to households who would otherwise become homeless due to the economic crisis.

“They should either be homeless or at risk of being homeless,” said James Rayphand, executive director of NMPASI.

The program was launched on Oct. 26 and approximately 1,000 people have already registered.

Some of the individuals who lined up to register did not know what the program was all about.

“We will process all applications and verify if they are eligible,” Rayphand said.

The assistance that will be given has nothing to do with an applicant’s residency, he added.

“If they become eligible, we expect them to take specific steps to secure jobs,” he added. “Whether you have a disability or not the expectation is you have to be accountable for yourself.”

Applications will be approved depending on the level of need. “It is a case to case basis. It will take three to four days to know if they are eligible,” Rayphand said.

Because of the number of people who are applying for the program, he said they are not accepting new applicants until further notice.
