Interior to recommend improved status for guest workers

He  will stay on Saipan for just 24 hours and will hold a brief press conference after meeting with the governor.

The Interior’s recommendation should include a report on the number of aliens residing in the CNMI; a description of the legal status of such aliens; the number of years each alien has been residing here; the current and future requirements of the CNMI economy for an alien workforce; and the recommendations on their future status.

These recommendations still need to be introduced and passed by the U.S. Congress before they can become law.

The governor earlier said he would not oppose Interior’s recommendations, provided it would not force the CNMI to accept them.

Fitial favors the continued stay of guest workers on the islands but not  the granting of improved status.
