Early this month, the field office reported to the Department of Public Safety that burglars stole diesel fuel from the facility.
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela told Variety he has already set a time for the inventory and implemented “drastic measures” to prevent another break-in in the area.
During the break-in, the burglars drained the diesel fuel from the tanks of the heavy equipment parked inside the field office.
Because they could not hire a security guard, Tudela said his personnel may conduct routine checks to secure the field office.
Joe Tenorio, director for operations at the field office, said they have already requested DPS to regularly patrol the area during the evening, especially during weekends.
The burglary at the field office happened during a power outage.
Tenorio said they have already fixed and secured the facility’s perimeter fence after the incident.
Tudela said they will implement a new scheme on fuel consumption that will limit storage of fuel during weekends when heavy equipment is not in used.
After the break-in, the mayor said, the delivery of basic services was delayed because they have a limited supply of diesel and some of the delivery trucks and heavy equipment could not be operated.
The field office uses the equipment and trucks to transport water and oversee the maintenance and repair of roads.
