Japanese students enjoy Saipan visit

KSKK established its cultural exchange program with Saipan over 30 years ago.

Some of the families and the Japanese students they hosted in the past are still communicating with each other, Seman said.

Those students have returned to Saipan as tourists, she added.

On Saturday, the students with KSKK and their chaperone left the island with 32 students who were with the Sanpo-en delegation, another cultural exchange group from Japan.

Seman said the mayor’s office hosted a “sayanora” dinner for the students on Friday.

While here, the students stayed with their host families and learned about the culture and traditions of the Chamorros and Carolinians, she added.

The cultural exchange visit was very successful, she said.

According to Seman, the mayor’s office appreciated the support extended by the Pacific Islands Club for accommodating the students at the PIC water park; the Marianas Resort for the golf cart passes, the Saipan Zoo for its free admission; the American Memorial Park rangers for their continued assistance;  and businessman Tony Pellegrino for providing free transportation to Managaha.

The mayor also thanked Richard Maratita for assisting in the preparation and coordination of the cultural exchange activities.

This September, Seman said the mayor’s office will start accepting applications for the Saipan delegation that will visit Japan.

She said they need 15 students from different schools on Saipan for the cultural exchange program in October.
