Japanese students join ‘I Niño Jesus’ celebration

The nine students and their chaperon are visiting Saipan as part of the International Youth Association of Japan or KSKK program.

“I hope they will have great time on island and bring home many memories,” she said.

Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores said the visit of Japanese students this holiday season is “perfect” as the island is enjoying good weather.

The chaperon Marumi Minagawa  said they appreciate the island’s beautiful ocean and the hospitality of  local residents.

“The weather is nice and the people are kind,” she added.

Sora Midorikawa, 10, said Saipan is “very enjoyable.”

Two years ago, Aika Nakangawa,  11, was also part of the KSKK cultural exchange program. She said she keeps coming back because she loves the island.

Nijiho Ura, 12, said it was her first time to visit the island . “I want to come back.”

Aside from joining  “I Niño Jesus,” during which a group of people carried the statue of baby Jesus to each house in the village,  the students also gave gifts to local families, Seman said.

Seman, whose family is among the local hosts, said they also gave Christmas gifts to the students.

Also hosting students are Rose Dela Cruz, Peter Lucas, Gordon Marciano and Jennifer Tkel.

The group arrived on Dec. 24 and will leave Saipan this Friday. While here, the students will visit Managaha and other tourist and historical sites.

The mayor’s office will host a “Sayanora Party” for the students on Thursday.
