Jurors continue deliberation on extortion case vs ex-detective

Visiting Judge David O. Carter of the Central District of California has granted the jurors’ request for the transcribed testimony of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s cooperating witness, “Tiger,” and Sgt. Sylvan Rangamar, then-supervisor of Leon Guerrero.

The prosecution charged Leon Guerrero with accepting bribe money from Tiger from $200 to $500 between June and October last year.

The bribe was in exchange for the release of police evidence that included two vehicles involved in  illegal taxicab operations, and paraphernalia, like radio and other belongings of Tiger and his friend, the prosecution stated.

It added that the bribe  included the dropping of charges against the drivers who were arrested for operating illegal taxicabs.

The defense said Leon Guerrero was investigating the illegal taxicab operations on island and was also using Tiger as a cooperating witness when he was arrested last November.

The former police detective  has denied the extortion charges.

Leon Guerrero is out on bail and has been released to his wife as his third party custodian.

Leon Guerrero is being represented by court-appointed defense attorney David Banes.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O’Malley is the prosecutor.
