“This semester we tested everyone in a program called Kuder and it is our career assessment tool that we use,” said Bucher. Kuder Inc. is the leading provider of Internet-based tools and resources that help students and adults achieve their educational and career planning goals.
The Kuder Career Planning System has become the solution of choice for individuals around the world when it comes to identifying their interests, exploring their options, and planning for career success (see www.kuder.com).
Health science and agriculture food and natural resources were the top two interests among the KagHS student body.
Bucher said she invited guest speakers specially chosen to accommodate the career interests of the students.
“When a student wants to learn about agriculture what better way than to invite someone who has a career in agriculture like Clause Bier and Sid Cabrera?” Bucher added.
Interestingly, the students were on a modified schedule so they were given a chance to learn about the career they were most interested in. Almost every classroom had a speaker with a career that reflected the interest of each group of students.
“The day is divided into three sessions. The first session started at nine and the last session ends at twelve,” Bucher said. Each session is about an hour long.
“I really wanted to do a career fair that was not centered on the government and military. I wanted to give the kids a perspective of the private sector and the variety of jobs out there — it’s not just police officers, fire fighters, teachers and lawyers. There are so many jobs out there in every field,” Bucher told Variety.
When asked for comment, KagHS principal Alfred Ada said: “We are in the business of steering students to the right career path that engages their interests — what they are passionate about — and what better way than to educate our youth and try to figure out what they want to do for the rest of their lives.”
He added, “Our students of today are lucky that they are being exposed to other careers out there because I was not exposed to this in my younger years.”
According to Ada, “I wanted to be a radiologist, a chef, a respiratory therapist but in the end I became an educator. Had I known this from the beginning I would have not spent so much time trying to find a career that fit my personality. It hurts to keep searching and feeling so lost on what I wanted to be. But now these children can start in high school, even in junior high and that’s the trend we are establishing.”
