Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan was one of four original co-sponsors of the measure, when it was introduced last month.
“We are grateful to all of our law enforcement officers — ports police, marine conservation officers, firefighters, patrol officers, detectives — for their commitment to make our communities as safe as possible,” said Sablan.
“But, especially, as we approach May 15, which is Peace Officers Memorial Day, we remember those law enforcement officers who have sacrificed their lives or who have been disabled protecting us all from harm.”
House Resolution 1299 was authored by Rep. Ted Poe, R-Tx.
Poe and Rep. Jim Costa, D-Ca., are co-founders of the Congressional Victims Rights Caucus, of which Sablan is also a member. The caucus Web site is http://vrc.poe.house.gov.
The May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day was established in 1962 by an act of Congress signed by President John F. Kennedy.
Communities around the nation pay their respects on this day. And many families of the fallen officers gather at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., where the names of the more than 17,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty are inscribed.
