Sablan, in a media conference on Friday, said the U.S. Republicans have their own set of agenda which includes taking away healthcare legislation that benefits the commonwealth.
Sablan, an Independent, said he won’t caucus with the Republicans but he will work with them.
“There are many who cross the aisle for many reasons and I’m one of those,” he said, adding that in his first term as delegate to the U.S. Congress, he established good ties with Republicans, especially those in leadership positions.
“I will work with them. I have good friends among them,” he added..
He said he is part of the group of U.S. lawmakers who meet every Thursday morning, rain or shine.
During these meetings, he sits next to the group’s leader, Colorado Democratic Rep. John Salazar, the older brother of Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
Congressman Salazar lost to a Tea Party-backed Republican last Nov. 2.
Sablan said it is not his intention to prove wrong the NMI Republicans who claimed during the campaign that only their candidate could work with national Republicans.
“My purpose in life and in this job is not to prove anybody wrong. It is to do the work for the people of the commonwealth and that is what I do,” he said.
