It was the first time the competition was held after it was stopped eight years ago.
Kingz & Dreamerz, who regularly perform at the Oceans Bar and Johnny’s Bar, played two original and one adopted contemporary songs.
The band leader is Juanito Innocenti who plays the bongo.
Its other members are Miki Lisua, “mute” guitarist; Iune Wabol, uke; Amber Mendiola, vocals; Pete Iginoef, bass; John Aldan, rhythm guitar; Greg Tebit, lead guitar; and Rex Borja, drums.
All of the members are also vocalists.
They performed their original compositions “Dreamland” and “C. F.”
Lisua said “Dreamland” is about love and how a man can win the heart of a woman, while “C.F.” is about how the group would like to express their songs and how the people could interact with their music.
During the performance of Kingz & Dreamerz, members of the audience came up to the stage and danced with the band members.
Kingz & Dreamerz were formed two and half years ago. “We are hoping to join again in the next year’s competition,” Lisua said.
The entertainment committee led by Parker Yobei and Gordon Marciano, the Liberation Day committee vice chairman, lauded Kingz & Dreamerz and the other participating bands: Black Sands, Latte Vibes, Just 4 Fun, Past & Present, Irie Rice and UBBN.
This year’s competition had one winner only who received a $1,000 cash prize donated by Mel Ada, owner of Shop 670 and an entertainment committee member.
Its other members are Joe Limes, Patsy Ythemar, Glorina Monkeya, Shirley Monkeya and John Hosono.
Saipan Mayor Donald G. Donald witnessed the awarding of the grand prize to Kingz & Dreamerz.
This year’s Battle of the Bands judges were Joe Limes, Eddie Johnson, John Guerrero, Felix Sasamoto and Joe Diaz.
The bands were judged based on originality, audience impact, quality of performance and presentation.
