DEQ recycling contest coordinator John Paul Flores told the Variety that Koblerville collected a total of 121,197 pounds of recycled materials and was awarded the $300 grand prize.
William S. Reyes Elementary School won $200 for the second place for collecting 27,080 pounds of recycled materials, while San Vicente Elementary School received $100 as third place winner for collecting 12,620 pounds of recycled materials.
Flores said 13 elementary and high schools participated in the recycling contest which started on Nov. 26, 2009 and ended on April 9, 2010.
“Last year, we started late, and the participating schools have only about three months to collect recycled materials. We started early this year to give them a longer time to work,” Flores said.
Koblerville collected over 100,000 pounds of recycled materials last year.
Flores said the recycled materials the students collected included plastic cans and water bottles, aluminum cans, card boards, newspapers, and other materials.
“We did not include glass and metal to be collected for the recycled materials to avoid the risk of harm among the students, especially the elementary students,” Flores said.
The winners were recognized during the Environmental Expo at American Memorial Park yesterday morning.
The recycling contest is part of DEQ’s series of activities held yearly in celebration of the Environmental Awareness Month every April.
