“All sex offenders must be registered for life as required by federal law, and the failure to comply must also be addressed to insure the safety of our members of our community,” said Rep. Joseph M. Palacios, R-Saipan.
Attorney General Edward T. Buckingham earlier said the Legislature may consider amending the local law to make it consistent with the federal Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.
Public Law 11-104 requires sex offenders to register for 10 years, and failure to register will be imprisoned up to a year or a fine of $1,000.
The Department of Public Safety has yet to upload the profiles of sex offenders on its website because its standard operating procedure has not been reviewed by the Attorney General’s Office since it was submitted in July last year.
DPS said it has 104 registered sex offenders.
