AFTER a series of hikes over the past few weeks, fuel prices in the CNMI fell Thursday, with gasoline dropping by 20 cents and diesel by 45 cents following the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
Mobil Oil and Shell Marianas reduced gasoline prices to $6.51 a gallon from $6.71, while diesel fell to $9.53 a gallon from $9.98. Mobil Oil’s Supreme gasoline dropped to $6.96 a gallon from $7.16.
Tinian Fuel Services had not changed its prices as of Thursday afternoon, with gasoline at $8.839 a gallon and diesel at $12.389. On Rota, Calvo Enterprises raised its prices Wednesday, with regular gasoline now $7.99 a gallon and diesel $11.22 a gallon.
Office of the Governor Special Advisor for Policy and Programs Kimo M. Rosario said he was pleased to see the decline. “Now that the economy is still recovering, the last thing we need is added costs,” he said. He hopes prices continue to fall, noting the impact on the community.
Rosario, who monitors school construction projects, said he also hopes fuel costs do not rise enough to affect construction materials, which could trigger change orders. “If construction supplies have not yet arrived on the island, shipping costs — impacted by the global oil crisis — could increase project expenses,” he said. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed on fuel prices, because every piece of construction equipment, from cranes to backhoes, needs diesel.”
