FOLLOWING a violator stop, a motorist cited for reckless driving was arrested after resisting and assaulting a police officer Wednesday afternoon.
Department of Public Safety public information officer Sgt. Fred Sato, in a statement on Thursday, stated that on Jan. 3, 2024, at approximately 4:48 p.m., a patrol officer noticed a yellow Ford Mustang weaving in and out of the northbound and southbound inner lanes of Chalan Pale Arnold or Middle Road in Garapan.
“The officer pulled over the vehicle on the shoulder of the northbound lane near Commonwealth Health Center. The officer approached the driver and explained the reason for the stop. However, the driver, a 38-year-old Asian male, became upset and informed the officer that he didn’t have his driver’s license with him and was on his way home,” Sato said.
“As the officer continued questioning the driver, the driver suddenly turned on the car and tried to flee. The officer quickly opened the driver’s door and tried to turn off the car, but a struggle ensued. A second officer arrived on scene to assist, but the driver continued to resist,” Sato added.
He said during the struggle, the driver kicked an officer in the stomach.
“As the struggle continued, another officer and two off-duty law enforcement officers arrived to help restrain the uncooperative and combative driver. The officers were able to subdue the driver, and he was placed in handcuffs, secured in the patrol car, and taken to [the Department of Corrections] to be booked and detained,” he said.
No other information about the driver was available as of press time Thursday.
