Man charged with beating girlfriend

Based on preliminary findings, Patrol Sgt. Joaquin Camacho and Patrol Officer Jackson Jack who responded to the scene learned that the victim was the girlfriend of defendant Sydney C. Kani.

In an affidavit submitted to the court, Investigator Nicholas C. Leon Guerrero Jr. said the Department of Public Safety received an assault and battery report in As Matuis at around 4 a.m. on July 5.

Leon Guerrero said that according to the victim, she left the house of the defendant and went with some in-laws and had a couple of beers at Tanapag Beach at 1 a.m. on July 5.

When she arrived back at the defendant’s house, she heard her 10-month-old baby crying.

The defendant was angry for her being late and tried to punch her face.

The victim said  she took the baby and ran to the car.

She said the defendant followed her, punched her in the head and pushed her to the ground.

The defendant, she added, kicked her while she was on the ground holding the baby.

When she was able to get up she ran to the car but the defendant kept on punching her legs as he tried to grab the baby, she told police.

Further investigation showed that the defendant assaulted three other individuals who tried to assist the victim.

The three got bruises on different parts of their bodies.

The defendant was later arrested and transported to the Department of Corrections.

The court found that probable cause exists to charge the defendant with one count of assault and battery. A $5,000 bail was set by the court.
