Man in motel robbery ordered to post $50K cash bail

Govendo ordered the defendant, if he posts bail, not to go near the victims or Park Villa Hotel.

Santos has to surrender his passport and not leave Saipan. He must stay away from seaports and airports, not consume alcoholic beverages, and observe a daily 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

Govendo set the preliminary hearing for Dec. 2, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. and the arraignment for Dec. 9, 2008 at 9 a.m.

An affidavit filed by Detective George F. David in court states that Patrol Officer Norbert Mettao responded to reported robbery incident at the Park Villa Hotel, the former Honeymoon Motel, in Gualo Rai at about 2:04 a.m. on Nov. 21, 2008.

Preliminary investigations showed that the defendant, a regular customer, called Yoon Chang and a motel attendant for extra bath towels.

The attendant said that when she returned to the defendant’s room with the towels, Santos ran out of his room and grabbed her around the neck using his right arm. She said Santos used the towel and strangled her with it. She said she struggled with the defendant but Santos held a knife to her stomach and dragged her into the room.

Santos kept demanding for money while dragging her toward the bathroom.

In great fear, the attendant pulled out the money from her waist pouch and threw it on the floor.

She said Santos let her go as he took the money, while she ran to another room to hide.

Santos was later seen driving his vehicle in Susupe along Texas Road.

Police ordered him to stop his vehicle in front of Family Discount Store.

The motel attendant was brought to the area and she positively identified Santos.

The knife and towel that Santos used against the attendant were recovered in his room.

Santos told police that he needed money to pay for his bills.
