These activities include the cleaning of several historical sites in the island, cultural heritage presentations to groups and classes, tours to historical sites and other activities.
HPO specialist John Palacios yesterday said the archaeological and historical sites, historical buildings and landscapes that have been discovered and recorded tell the story of the Marianas.
He said this year’s theme “This Place Matters” sums up the concept of cultural and historic preservation.
A visiting archeologist is on island to look into historical sites.
Olaf Winter, a student of Dr. Geoffrey Clark at the Australian National University, said he had been on Saipan for a couple of days, and stayed on Guam for three weeks for the same purpose.
Winter said it is his second time to visit Saipan.
“I have researched on the early colonization of the Marianas,” Winter said.
Yesterday, acting Gov. Eloy S. Inos declared May 22-31 as Historic Preservation Week.
“I urge all residents to recognize the importance of historic preservation and to work toward a greater understanding of our archaeological history and culture,” Inos said.
