Mayor RB expresses concern over reduction in force by Micronesia Resort

SAIPAN Mayor Ramon B. Camacho expressed deep concern and sadness over the recent decision by Micronesia Resort Inc., a subsidiary of Eland Corporation, to issue a reduction in force notice, affecting employees of both Kensington Hotel Saipan and Pacific Islands Club Saipan.

“This is truly unfortunate news that directly impacts the livelihood of our people and the economic well-being of our island,” said Mayor Camacho. “We sympathize with the employees and their families who now face an uncertain future.”

According to public statements, MRI is experiencing ongoing financial difficulties, which led to the difficult decision of workforce reductions. As a result of these challenges, Mayor Camacho believes this development raises serious concerns about MRI’s current proposal to acquire the former Marianas Resort property in Marpi.

“It is not a good idea to put all our ‘eggs’ in one basket, particularly considering MRI’s financial situation. It’s crucial that we diversify our investors to protect our community and our economy. Until such time that the MRI recovers financially or until we can possibly rebid the opportunity to investors who are in a much more financially stable condition, I urge our leaders and government agencies to reconsider any pending approvals,” said Mayor Camacho.

He emphasized the need for careful, forward-thinking decisions when it comes to the long-term development of public land and tourism infrastructure. “Our priority must be protecting our people, promoting sustainable growth, and ensuring that our land is entrusted to partners who have the capacity to honor their commitments and support our economy,” he added.
