SAIPAN Mayor RB Camacho recognized a local Saipan Marine veteran for his service to his country and his determination to give back to our community despite his physical impairment.
Ambrosio Tagabuel Ogumoro served in the United States Marine Corps for over 22 years and retired with the rank of master sergeant on June 12, 1999.
He has unfortunately suffered a surgery-related injury on his spinal cord, rendering him paralyzed and eventually leading him to become wheelchair bound.
However, despite the challenges and setbacks in his life, this did not stop Ogumoro from fighting to regain his strength.
He said while watching the U.S. Marine Corps marching in the annual CNMI Liberation Day parade, the image of his fellow Marine brothers moving in formation filled him with emotions and an overwhelming sense of pride. For a brief moment, he managed to move his foot, something that doctors told him would have been impossible with his condition.
It was this moment that pushed Ogumoro to keep fighting to regain his health and strength. He currently is on the slow but gradual road to recovery. His primary motivation in walking again is his determination to get back out in the community and serve the people.
A former Department of Public Safety deputy commissioner, Ogumoro has held several positions in the community. He was the chair of the Refaluwasch Association and he hopes to continue his work for the people once he recovers.
In a small ceremony, Mayor Camacho recognized Ogumoro’s service and his will and determination to overcome any odds no matter how difficult. The mayor presented Ogumoro with an official 80th Battle of Saipan and Tinian Medallion. The medallion was given to Ogumoro as a tribute to his service in the U.S. Marines, the same force that came ashore during the Battles for Saipan and Tinian 80 years ago.
It was during the presentation of the medallion that Ogumoro stood up from his wheelchair to receive it from the mayor himself, a moment that was full of pride and emotion.
Ogumoro humbly thanked the mayor for this special recognition. He sends his gratitude to all of those who prayed for his recovery. He praised his family, especially his beloved wife, for continuing to stick by his side through the most challenging and daunting moments of his life.
Ogumoro has made it clear that his mission is to regain and rebuild his strength and get back out in the community to serve the people.
An important part of the determination and resiliency in his character comes from his service in the Marines. One quote from his time in the service — “Never Give Up. Never Surrender.” — guides and motivates him to this day.
He wants to highly encourage the youth to consider a career in the Marine Corps.
Ogumoro hopes his journey inspires others to overcome their challenges and tribulations no matter what the circumstances are.
