On Friday, two teams from the mayor’s sports and youth special program cleaned up the area between the Ada Sports Complex and Marianas High School in Susupe, and the Sugar King area in Garapan.
Vic Pangelinan, the Saipan mayor’s office public information officer, said they started the community services using available equipment.
The lack of equipment, he said, will not prevent the mayor’s office from pursuing its beautification program.
The cleanup operation at the sports complex was made in preparation for the Feb. 21 Little League games, he added.
This week, he said, they will continue the cleanup operation in other areas.
The office of the mayor will entertain requests for cleanup even though it has already scheduled areas for the operation.
Pangelinan said Mayor Donald P. Flores will address the problem of equipment before the rainy season so they can fully carry out the program.
During the transition period, Pangelinan said, they discovered that some of the equipment at the mayor’s field office in Lower Base was no longer operational.
The mayor’s office will coordinate with the Department of Public Work in implementing the cleanup campaign which needs heavy equipment.
In his inaugural address, Flores said his administration will address the problems on junk cars, debris and stray dogs.
Pangelinan said they also need the support and cooperation of the community.
He admitted that the first week of the new municipal administration was “a little hectic because there were things that we had yet to locate and put in place.”
However, he said, residents who sought help from the mayor’s office were given assistance.
“We were able to serve the people as much as we could,” Pangelinan said.
