Medina retires as postmaster

During a  gathering at the post office in Chalan Kanoa on Friday morning, Leo B. Tudela, U.S. Postal Service director for Asia-Pacific-Micronesia international relations global business, swore in Camacho.

“We are confident that Camacho will continue to do the job and give the best service to the community. We have seen what a dedicated and committed worker she is over the past years,” Tudela said.

Medina, who was born in Puerto Rico but grew up in Indiana, will be attending to his personal life and enjoying more time with his family after serving 39 years in the postal service. He became Saipan’s postmaster in May 2008.

Medina began his career with the postal office at the Hagåtña Station on Guam in 1973, serving as a mail carrier for 17 years before assuming a variety of supervisory positions within the Guam Post Office.

“I am sure Camacho can do the job and continue to improve what we have been doing here through the years,” Medina said.

He told the Variety that what he will miss most about Saipan are the people.

“I love the island and its people. I will miss interacting with the suppliers and vendors and the community but I know the postal office is in good hands under Camacho,” Medina said.

Camacho, a former sales and services associate at the Saipan Post Office, said she knows the job will be challenging but with her 17 years of experience and with the support of the whole post office staff,  “we can do it.”

She added, “There is still so much to be done and there is more room for improvement.”

Bishop Emeritus Tomas A. Camacho, who attended the ceremony, said he is very proud of Camacho and is confident she can do what is expected of her.

Also in attendance during the swearing-in ceremony were family members and relatives, vendors and suppliers, customs officials, lawmakers and invited guests.

The 18,000-square-foot Saipan Postal Office receives over 200,000 pieces of parcel mail each year.
