Fran Castro of MINA said they distributed 250 trees ready for planting and 100 tree vouchers for redemption of trees from the three nurseries on island.
“We were happy with the response because people just kept stopping by the office and picking up trees for planting,” Castro said.
350 trees were set to be planted on island yesterday.
“We got a good mix of students, organizations and individuals who came and picked up various trees such as red and yellow flame trees and betel nut trees for planting,” Castro said.
The 100 tree vouchers, which are worth $10 each, were redeemed at the Wireless Ridge nursery on Capital Hill, the Tropical Gardens at the Saipan Zoo in As Mahetog, and at the Bureau of Plant Industry nursery in Kagman.
Environmental award
Castro said she commends Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan for nominating MINA for this year’s Environmental Protection Agency Zero-Waste Advocate Environmental Award.
“Nominating MINA means a lot because it would give us more recognition, which would allow us to apply for grants and accept donations so we can implement more programs,” Castro said.
The award, which will be announced in November, is given to an organization or entity that implements practices “that minimize resource consumption, promote reuse and/or recycle and compost materials.”
MINA has been spearheading cleanup activities and environmental projects all over the island for the past years.
